As a photographer who works almost solely on location, I am always looking for new and beautiful places to take my clients for their photo sessions. My clients are given a questionairre at the time of booking which allows me to get to know them a bit better. Learning about the client and their family and their personalities, hobbies, interests, often gives me an idea of what kind of location might be best for their photo session. Occassionally a client's home is the best setting, although, sometimes a trek into Dartmoor is more appropriate for an active family who enjoys weekends outdoors. I am lucky to live in Devon where beautiful locations to work in are so abundant. Here is a list of my 5 favourite places in which to photograph familes.
1. Mincinglake Park, Exeter Formerly a city rubbish site, this often forgotten area, frequented by dog walkers, is a beautiful place to photograph. There is a mile long easy walk throughout the park which includes various terrain and backdrops such as long grass, streams, bridges, walking track. Mincinglake is located centrally in Exeter so its easily accessible for anyone who lives there and perfect if you want you family dog involved! 2.Whitestone Park, Whitestone Leaving exeter through Exwick and Redhills brings you through Nadderwater and into the gorgeous little village of Whitestone. Just behind the village hall there is a sizable play park with some of the most beautiful views, which on a clear day can include the sea! This location can be a challenge in summer sunshine as there is little shade, but the view is worth the risk!
3. The Seaside Travelling to the nearest beach such as Exmouth or Teignmouth is always worth the trip! Being at the seaside instantly makes people relax and have fun. Sand, sea, pebbles, rockpools, light, beach huts...what's not to love!? Always an ideal spot for family photos, providing the weather cooperates!
4. Fingle Bridge Inn, Drewsteignton, Devon Fingle Bridge is by far my favourite photo location. Famously one of the most beautiful spots in Dartmoor, it might involve, for many people, a substantial trek into the moors. You might be put off by the location or find the journey into the moors a bonus depending on your personality! I often book clients for early sessions at Fingle so that they can spend the rest of the day visiting the area, having a drink either of the two local pubs or a hike up to Castle Drogo where you will see some of the most awesome views in all of Dartmoor (which puts it in the running for the most awesome in all of Britain, if you ask me)!
5. Stay right at home! Don't assume you have to travel far for great family portraits. Often staying right at home is all you need. I will happily visit clients at home for sessions in the back garden or just your lounge if the weather is terrible. Being at home means everyone is comfortable and relaxed and your photos will reflect your family in the very place that means the most to them. Parents love having photos of their children playing in their favourite play spot, or in the garden you all helped to create together. Home locations are intimate, fun and, of course, convenient! (And there's always an opportunity for a cup of tea!)
These are only an example of the locations I use and I am always looking for new ones! If you have any recommendations please let me know! I am always open to suggestions! Dee :)
